The "Aegukga" (Patriotic Song) transforms into a deeply passionate, rhythmic anthem in football stadiums, driven by South Korea’s famous supporter group, the Red Devils. Fans typically sing while holding up their unfolded team scarves overhead with both hands, creating a dense sea of red across the stands. The undeniable peak of stadium volume occurs right at the start of the chorus on the line "Mugunghwa samcheolli hwaryeo gangsan" (Rose of Sharon, three thousand li of splendid rivers and mountains), where the crowd heavily accents the word "Mugunghwa" with a synchronized forward surge. A great piece of history here is that the anthem was originally sung to the tune of the traditional Scottish folk song Auld Lang Syne during the early 1900s, before composer Ahn Eak-tai grew tired of hearing his nation's lyrics set to a foreign melody and composed the current orchestral score in 1935.

This chant adapts lyrics from “Arirang,” Korea’s most famous traditional folk song, and blends it with football support for South Korea. The mix of cultural heritage and stadium chanting makes it a powerful expression of Korean identity and national pride during soccer matches.

As for the word "Arirang," the exact origin of it is unknown, but it is often interpreted symbolically:

Ari (아리): Can mean "beautiful," "dear," or "sorrow."
Rang (랑): Can refer to a "beloved one" or "together with."
Arirang: Together, it is commonly understood to mean "my beloved one." It also refers to a symbolic mountain pass (Arirang Pass) that one must cross, representing the journey of life and overcoming hardships.
