君が代 - Kimigayo (National Anthem)
君が代は
千代に八千代に
さざれ石の
いわおとなりて
苔のむすまで
Transliteration:
Kimigayo wa
Chiyo ni yachiyo ni
Sazare-ishi no
Iwao to narite
Koke no musu made
Translation:
May your reign
Continue for a thousand, eight thousand generations,
Until pebbles
Grow into boulders,
And until moss grows on them.

The national anthem of Japan, "Kimigayo" (His Imperial Majesty's Reign), brings a profoundly solemn, atmospheric hush to football matchdays, contrasting sharply with the energetic chanting that follows. When the Samurai Blue take the pitch, fans in the active supporter sections unfurl massive, elegant national flags and giant tifo displays, holding their team scarves perfectly still overhead. The absolute peak of stadium volume isn't an aggressive roar, but rather a deep, swelling operatic harmony that builds steadily toward the final line: "Sazare-ishi no iwao to narite, koke no musu made" (Until pebbles grow into boulders, and until moss grows on them). At this exact moment, the crowd collective holds the final long, sustained vocal notes with remarkable, spine-tingling resonance.

A fascinating piece of history is that Kimigayo features some of the oldest lyrics of any national anthem in the world, adapted from an anonymous Heian-period poem dating back over a thousand years (between 794 and 1185). The melody itself was selected much later in 1880, built around a traditional court music scale (gagaku) that gives the anthem its distinctive, ethereal, and ancient sound. Because the lyrics are incredibly brief—spanning just 32 characters in total—it stands as one of the shortest active national anthems in existence, serving as a concentrated, highly poetic vow of longevity before kickoff.
