When La Albirroja takes the pitch at the Estadio Defensores del Chaco, players and fans alike stand rigidly at attention, frequently placing their right hands over their hearts as a sea of red, white, and blue flags fills the stands. The absolute peak of stadium volume explodes during the roaring, repetitive chorus lines, specifically on the defiant exclamation "¡Paraguayos, República o Muerte!" (Paraguyans, Republic or Death!), where tens of thousands of voices pierce the air with fierce, historical conviction. A compelling piece of history behind this anthem is that the grand, operatic melody is widely attributed to Hungarian composer Francisco José Debali, while the highly poetic, anti-colonial lyrics were written in 1846 by the Uruguayan poet Francisco Acuña de Figueroa (who also penned Uruguay's anthem). Originally featuring a massive, multi-verse structure tracking historical battles, the stadium version utilizes a condensed format that transitions seamlessly from an orchestral march into a powerful, collective vow of sovereignty.
