Paraguay National Team Chant Lyrics

Himno Nacional Paraguayo (National Anthem)

¡A los pueblos de América infausta
tres centurias un cetro oprimió,
mas un día soberbia levantando,
"¡Basta!" dijo y el cetro rompió!

Nuestros padres, lidiando grandiosos,
ilustraron su gloria marcial;
y trozada la augusta diadema,
alzarón el gorro triunfal.

Paraguayos, ¡República o Muerte!
nuestro brío nos dio libertad;
ni opresores sostienen su saña,
ni tiranos afrentan su altar.

Translation:
To the unfortunate peoples of America
A scepter oppressed for three centuries,
But one proud day arising,
"Enough!" it said, and broke the scepter!

Our fathers, fighting grandly,
Illustrated their martial glory;
And the august diadem being shattered,
They raised the triumphal cap.

Paraguayans, Republic or Death!
Our courage gave us freedom;
Neither oppressors sustain their fury,
Nor tyrants affront its altar.

  • The "Himno Nacional Paraguayo" produces a deeply moving, solemn atmosphere on matchdays, characterized by intense national pride and military precision. When La Albirroja takes the pitch at the Estadio Defensores del Chaco, players and fans alike stand rigidly at attention, frequently placing their right hands over their hearts as a sea of red, white, and blue flags fills the stands. The absolute peak of stadium volume explodes during the roaring, repetitive chorus lines, specifically on the defiant exclamation "¡Paraguayos, República o Muerte!" (Paraguyans, Republic or Death!), where tens of thousands of voices pierce the air with fierce, historical conviction. A compelling piece of history behind this anthem is that the grand, operatic melody is widely attributed to Hungarian composer Francisco José Debali, while the highly poetic, anti-colonial lyrics were written in 1846 by the Uruguayan poet Francisco Acuña de Figueroa (who also penned Uruguay's anthem). Originally featuring a massive, multi-verse structure tracking historical battles, the stadium version utilizes a condensed format that transitions seamlessly from an orchestral march into a powerful, collective vow of sovereignty.

Patria querida

Patria querida somos tu esperanza
Somos la flor del bello porvenir
Volverá tu antigua bien andanza
Con su fama a relucir

Y en los anales de tu noble historia
Te lo juramos va nuestro valor
A escribir la página de gloria
Del honor, del honor, del honor
