The Colombian national anthem has a fascinatingly strange backstory. The lyrics were written by Rafael Núñez, who was a poet and served as the President of Colombia four times. The music, however, was composed by an Italian opera singer, Oreste Síndici, in 1887 at the request of a theater director to celebrate the independence of Cartagena. It was legally locked in as the official anthem in 1920.
