فِي سَبِيلِ المَجْد (Fī Sabīli al-Majd) - In Pursuit of Glory
فِي سَبِيلِ الْمَجْدِ وَالْأَوْطَانِ نَحْيَا وَنَبِيدْ
كُلُّنَا ذُو هِمَّةٍ شَمَّاءَ جَبَّارٌ عَنِيدْ
لَا تُطِيقُ السَّادَةُ الْأَحْرَارُ أَطْوَاقَ الْحَدِيدْ
إِنَّ عَيْشَ الذُّلِّ وَالْإِرْهَاقِ أَوْلَىٰ بِالْعَبِيدْ
لَا نَهَابُ الزَّمَنْ إِنْ سَقَانَا الْمِحَنْ
فِي سَبِيلِ الْوَطَنْ كَمْ قَتِيلٍ شَهِيدْ؟
Transliteration:
Fi sabili al-majdi wa-l-awtani nahya wa-nabid
Kulluna du himmatin shamma'a jabbarun 'anid
La tutiqu as-sadatu al-ahraru atwaqa al-hadid
Inna 'aysha ad-dulli wa-l-irhaqi awla bi-l-'abid
La nahabu az-zaman in saqana al-mihan
Fi sabil al-watan kam qatilin shahid?
Translation
In pursuit of glory and the homeland, we live and perish.
We are all of lofty determination, mighty and resolute.
The free masters cannot bear the chains of iron.
For a life of humiliation and exhaustion befits only slaves.
We do not fear time, if it brings us trials.
For the sake of the homeland, how many martyrs have fallen?
- Written in the 1930s by poet Omar Abu Risha during the struggle against the French Mandate (1920–1946), "Fī Sabīli al-Majd" historically served as an iconic anti-colonial anthem. Following the fall of the Assad regime in late 2024, the song experienced a major revival across sports stadiums and official ceremonies, replacing the old Ba'athist-era anthem "Humāt ad-Diyār". Its powerful march cadence and lyrics—which directly celebrate overcoming foreign domination, iron chains, and oppression—make it a fierce rallying cry for Syrian football fans and national teams today.
