• Portugal's national anthem, A Portuguesa, is a fiercely patriotic battle song born from deep geopolitical humiliation. It was originally composed in 1890 as a protest march following the "British Ultimatum," an event where the British Empire forced Portugal to retreat its military forces from the territory connecting Angola and Mozambique. The song became a massive republican rally cry, directly fueling the revolution that overthrew the Portuguese monarchy in 1910.

• The original 1890 lyrics had a completely different enemy in mind. The final line of the chorus originally read "Contra os bretões marchar, marchar!" (Against the Britons march, march!). When the song was officially adopted as the national anthem in 1911, the republican government changed "bretões" (Britons) to "canhões" (cannons) to avoid a permanent diplomatic crisis with their oldest ally.
