The anthem exists because of a diplomatic protocol panic. In 1903, when the first foreign guide/diplomat (from Costa Rica) arrived to present credentials to the newly independent Panama, Panama realized they had no official national anthem to play for the ceremony. Santos Jorge quickly dug up a school track he had composed years prior, threw together temporary lyrics, and played it on the spot to save face. The lyrics used today are completely different from the original emergency version. The first set of lyrics focused heavily on the immediate political anger of separating from Colombia; a few years later, Jerónimo de la Ossa rewrote them entirely to focus on a more positive, forward-looking theme of global trade, human progress, and the oceans framing the Isthmus.
