The absolute peak of stadium volume explodes at the final, climatic line of the anthem: "Allāh, Al-Waṭan, Al-Malik" (God, Homeland, King). When this trio of core values is belted out, tens of thousands of fans pump their fists forward in perfect unison, sending a literal tremor through the stands. A fascinating piece of history behind this anthem is that the grand orchestral melody was composed by French military captain Léo Morgan during the protectorate era in 1956 simply as a fanfare salute. It existed as a completely wordless instrumental piece for over a decade until the legendary 1970 World Cup in Mexico, when Morocco qualified for the tournament and King Hassan II commissioned poet Ali Squalli Houssaini to urgently write lyrics so the team could proudly sing along on the global stage.
